Smell your way slim

According to Dr Alan R Hirsch, a neurologist and psychiatrist and author of Scentsational Weight Loss, you can smell yourself slim. Your sense of smell can help you slim down.

He noticed that people who lose their sense of smell gained weight. From there, he started his study on the sense of smell and a person's eating patterns.

Apparently, smelling the food fools the brain into thinkin that it has eaten the food. Note that when you spend hours in the kitchen preparing a meal, you don't eat that much of it as you don't feel that hungry.

In an early experiment, he distributed chocolate bars for the participants to smell. They were to smell the chocolate when they felt like eating, to control the cravings. It did not work. By mid morning, most of the subjects had eaten up the chocolate bars.

Then he separated the smell from the food by introducing aroma devices instead. He provided 1 apple fragrance, 1 banana fragrance and 1 peppermint fragrance to each participant. They were to smell them throughout the day during the trial. When they felt like eating more than they should, they would smell these devices to control the cravings. It worked. They all ate less and subsequently lost weight. Some as much as 100 pounds.
