The caveman syndrome

Weightloss the smart way? You've been really good. Stayed on your diet, counted the calories, ate only rabbit food (lettuce, carrots, celery and raw vegetables), but you are still far from your ideal weight. Some days, you seem to put on weight even while on this diet.

Yet another scenario is when a Spartan diet in the day in hopes of seeing some weightloss. That backfires and sends you on a binge at night. Skip breakfast and binge on chocolates and crisps. Net result? You are fatter than before.

What is going on here?

Basically, way back in the caveman days, food was scarce. Long winters in temperate climates, droughts in other areas meant that there were times when food was hard to come by. Our ancestors bodies had to store as much food as possible as fat. They had to burn as little calories as possible to survive long hard winters or famines. Weightloss then was dangerous.
Back to the future

Now that food is abundant, our bodies still behave the same way. If we drastically reduce our food intake, our bodies switch to starvation mode. Our metabolic rate slows. We store as much as possible as fat and burn as little as possible. Net effect? Weight gain. To make matters worse, we get incredibly hungry. Our bodies tell us to eat all we can to store food for the perceived famine. Result? Binging on the wrong foods at bad times.
Other causes of being overweight.

There is another possible reason why some people are overweight when they eat very little. There could be a problem with your thyroid gland. An under active thyroid gland would mean a lower metabolic rate. You store fat easily and find it very hard to lose weight. See a doctor if you suspect there is something wrong with your thyroid. That could be why your weightloss attempts failed.

Food allergies leading to bloating or water retention could be another culprit. Keep a food diary to see if that is the problem for you.

Comfort eating is yet another possible reason for being overweight. When you are depressed, your reach for chocolate. When you are stressed, you reach for ice cream. That is a sure way to pack on the pounds.
HELP!

Sounds depressing doesn't it? There is hope though. Find your ideal weight, eat a sensible diet to match your needs, goals and lifestyle and exercise regularly. It sounds easy, but requires a lot of discipline and determination to follow.



If comfort eating is your problem, find happiness from other things rather than food. Get support from friends. See a counselor if you must. You need help if you want sustained weightloss.
Exercise

Run, swim or join and aerobics class for overall weight loss. Try some exercises to tone the muscles in your flabby areas for inch loss.

Jogging is great exercise all over. Especially for burning fat.
