Peter Parker and Mary Jane

Their relationship in the first spiderman movie

In the Spiderman movie and in Spiderman2, Mary Jane is Peter Parker's sweetheart. He loved her from the day he first set his eyes on her.

Problem is, before that spider bite, she never noticed him. He was too shy to even approach her. After he became Spiderman, he grew more confident.

In the first Spiderman movie, He was able to approach M.J. as Peter. Their tender conversation over the fence was one of the very touching highlights of the movie. It helps tremendously that Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have incredible screen chemistry. You can almost feel the sizzle in every scene where they appear together. The conversation ended when her then boyfriend called her to see his new car.

While she was dating his best friend Harry, Spiderman saved Mary Jane from the Green Goblin. She fell for Peter's alter ego as he swung away bring her to safety. You could almost feel their ecstasy in the movie.

Then there was the earnest conversation Peter had with Mary when he saw her as a waitress. It was then that he found she was seeing his best friend. As she walked off, she was attacked by a gang of men. Peter changed to his Spidey outfit to rescue her. That was when they did that famous upside down kiss.

A tender moment where Mary Jane partly unmasked Spiderman who was hanging upside down. They kissed passionately in the rain. By then, M.J. had really fallen for Spiderman.

Then there was that thanksgiving dinner where Harry finally introduced his beautiful girlfriend, Mary Jane, to his dad. His cynical dad told him to 'do what you want with her then broom her'. Everyone in the room heard that. Mary Jane was hurt. Peter empathized with her.

Norman realized that Peter was Spiderman. He knew too that Peter loved Mary Jane, so he kidnapped her. In the highlight of the movie, the Green Goblin forced Spiderman to make a difficult situation. Save the woman he loves or save the innocent children. He saved both.

At the end of the movie, Mary Jane told Peter that when she was up there, about to die, she could only see one face. Peter's. She loved him. They kissed passionately. In spite of his feelings for her, he told her, he would always love her as a friend. She was heart broken as he walked away.  That kiss could have given away his secret to her. After all, she had kissed both Spiderman and Peter. She seemed to have made that connection as the movie ends.

Peter and M.J. in Spiderman 2

In Spiderman 2, their relationship takes on new twists and turns.

Mary Jane is a successful actress. Peter sees her posters everywhere. He is heart broken, as he cannot be with her because of his reponsibilities as Spiderman. Also, his fear that his enemies would attack her if he were in a relationship with her.

On Peter's birthday, Harry, Mary Jane and Aunt May are there to surprise him. After the party, Mary Jane lingers behind. They have a tender conversation over the fence.

M.J. has moved on in her life. Peter is still her best friend, but she can't keep thinking of him all the time.

In Spiderman 2, Mary Jane is dating another man. Eventually, they get engaged.

With the broken heart,  his conviction that with great powers come great responsibility and his longing not to be Spiderman anymore  he loses his powers. He needs glasses again. He cannot shoot webs, swing and is back to the way he once was. Happily, he chucks away his Spiderman costume to live a life as Peter, free to court Mary Jane.

By then, it is too late. He asks her to reconsider as he has changed. She agrees that he really has changed and turns him down.

One wonders whether it is because he had disappointed too many times with his by being late or appearing not to show up? She kept staring at his empty seat at her play.

Maybe it was because she sensed he lost his powers? And she loved him largely because of his spiderman powers?

Tender moments abound in Spiderman 2. Mary Jane rethinks her decision to go with the new guy. Unsure about what she really wants, she meets Peter at a cafe. To find out how he really feels about her. Whether he loves her. He says he does not. They get rudely interrupted by Doc Ock, who demands that Peter brings him Spiderman or Mary Jane will suffer. Doc Ock leaves with M.J. hostage. Peter's powers suddenly return.

In the final showdown, an unmasked Spiderman and Mary Jane have many tender moments. The part where he leaps between a huge steel wall that threatens to crush Mary Jane. Using his incredibly strong body to support the weight of the wall, lifting it away from Mary Jane. That was an unexpected albeit very romantic scene.

This reminds me of the comic book. A van nearly landed on Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker held off the van with his body.

It was a touching scene where Peter reveals his true feelings for her. Later, he tells her why he cannot be with her.. because of his duties as Spiderman and the dangers he will bring on to her.

Mary Jane is set to marry the other guy. She has to decide there and then to get on with it.

The character building in Spiderman 2 is far better than most movies I've seen. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are amazing as screen lovers. The unrequited love, the body language. Unspoken words all show beautifully in the scenes between Peter / Spidey without his mask and Mary Jane.

More about the movie Spiderman 2 Movie Review

Peter Parker and Mary Jane in Amazing Spiderman comic books.

In the Amazing Spiderman comic books, Peter Parker lost his first sweetheart, Gwen Stacy, when she was killed by the Green Goblin. similar to the spiderman movie, except that when Spiderman caught Gwen with his web after the Goblin threw her down, her spine snapped. She died instantly.

After a long time of healing, Peter Parker and Mary Jane got back together. They were meant for each other from the start anyway.

The first time Peter proposed to M.J., she turned him down. The second time, she accepted. They were married.

Later, they became separated. M.J. left to find herself. In the recent comic books, they have reunited once again.

Spidergirl

What happens to Peter Parker and Mary Jane in the future? There's another marvel comic book. Spidergirl.

In this comic, Spidergirl is May Parker. The daughter of Peter and Mary.

By then, Peter's an old man, limping around with a cane. Mary Jane is a spritely older woman who still looks great.

They are one happy little spider family.. in the Marvel Universe of the future.

Ultimate Spiderman's Peter and Mary

In the Ultimate Spiderman, a retelling of the spiderman tale, Mary is Peter's best friend. She is as brainy as he is. Both are 16 years old. Both study together.

Peter trusts Mary so much he tells Mary his secret. She laughs uncontrollably until he walks on the wall.

Gwen Stacy is the new girl in school, who fancies Peter too. This Gwen Stacy is one tough chick who plays with knives.

In the Ultimate Spiderman, it is an interesting love triangle between the three of them.
