Why most affiliates do not make much money

If you have a web site and hope to earn big bucks by

 joining affiliate programs and
slapping banners all over your site

Forget it.

In the first place, people hardly click on banners these days.

Instead, go for individual products or stick to text links.

Individual products

By individual product, I mean you talk about a product you have tried, and then have a link directly to it. Make it convenient for the reader to buy the product that is now on his mind.

Text links

By text link, I mean put the text link as a natural part of your statement about related content.

Commissions long after the first visit

Even if you get the reader to click to the merchant's site, they probably will not buy the first time they get there. Go for affiliate programs that pay you commissions for sales made 30 or more days after the reader followed a link from your site to the merchant's site.

Another problem is this. Say 10 affiliates sent the same reader to a merchant's site. The reader finally bought something on his 10th visit. The 10th affiliate gets the commission, while the other 9 get nothing.  Even the best affiliate program work that way.

Now imagine Yahoo or some other heavy weight joins your top affiliate program. Who do you thing is more likely to get the commission.

Competing with the big guys.

When I see Yahoo displaying the links for my top paying merchants, my heart sinks. I know my sales for that merchant will be close to zero, until Yahoo (or whoever) switches to some other program.

To get around this, diversify. Pick different merchants. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

 Scumware

I really hate this. Scumware refers to those websites that encourage readers to download their toolbars. These toolbars display their ads instead of yours when the reader goes to your site.

In other words, visitors read your articles, follow your recommendation, go to the recommended merchant with the scum ware makers taking credit for your sales. Commission for your hard work goes to the people behind the scum ware and not to you.

Tip: Get rid of spyware or scumware from your computer

Your own product

What's a small guy to do?

There is hope.

Sell your own product.

Set up an affiliate program selling your product and get others to help you as affiliates.

That is the step I decided to take. I bought Make Your Knowledge Sell just for that.

Make Your Knowledge Sell is a really comprehensive and complete guide on building your own infoproduct and selling it. It even covers issues like copyright, distribution and basically, everything you need to know if you were to make it in that biz.

I studied Make Your Knowledge Sell. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to succeed on the web. It is worth the investment.
