What do affiliates want?If you sell online, an affiliate program is one very effective way to bring in more business. For that to work, your affiliates have to promote your products and channel sales to you. What makes an affiliate promote your product and not your competitor's? The money factorLet's get real. Affiliates are in it for the money. An affiliate would focus on the merchant that gives them the most money overall. That means, best commission from the product that sells well. No point promoting your product if you cannot close the sales. Given 2 merchants selling the same product, both of whom are equally able to close the sales, the affiliate would choose the merchant that gives them the best return. Affiliates also prefer merchants who pay them commission for the customers that they sent to the site some time back. Affiliates are smart. They know that the person they send to you may not buy on the first visit. That person may come back directly to your site a few days later to complete the purchase. Would you pay them commissions for a sale like that? Some merchants do. These are the ones affiliates are more likely to promote. QualityAnother reason affiliates join your program is to enhance their own web site. They may have a content site. Their visitors want to know where to buy some of the products they happen to mention. That would spur them to offer their visitors good quality products that are value for their money. It could be as a service to those who visit their web sites. Such affiliates look for quality products. At the same time, an affiliate would not like his visitors to be unhappy with the service from the merchants they recommend. It is bad for their own image. Give good service to the customers they send you. Respond to queries, let them know up front the shipping times and details. Do you service international customers? If you don't let that be known up front. At the entry page to your web site. At the faqs with links from every page. If you do have problems closing sales, you might want to read Make your site sell. Click here to get that ebook. I bought a copy of that book myself and find its advice very practical and effective. Don't expect free traffic though. Everyone needs money to keep their web sites alive. Give measly commissions and these affiliates would go to your competition. Your competition would boom with some of your would be customers being sent by these affiliates to their web sites. How you treat your affiliatesSome merchants cheat their affiliates. They close the affiliate's accounts just as the payment threshold is about to be reached and refuse to pay out the commissions. Some switch off the tracking codes so that sales are not registered to the broker and they avoid paying the commission. Be aware that affiliates are web savvy and exchange notes on the programs they join. They will find out and spread the word about you. Then you'll eventually find your affiliates dropping out, the best affiliates avoiding you and sales dropping. These will probably join your competition and boost their sales instead of yours.
