To be an EntrepreneurDo you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? Doing your own business is not as easy as it seems. For every successful business, their are at least 10 or more failures, or even bankruptcies. On the other hand, the freedom, the high from being your own boss, from taking on the big guys and coming up tops, is something that words cannot fully describe. I spoke to a number of entrepreneurs about their lives. A middle aged woman, who runs a thriving costume jewelry whole sale business gave me this advice. Advice from a 'farmer' entrepreneurIt is better to work for someone. At least you have a regular salary and the bills are paid. You do not have to worry about unions, salaries, rental and like. Just take your salary and go home. As an entrepreneur, some days, you feast on lobster. Some days, you eat plain rice with a little salted fish. What that means is that good times can be really good, but be prepared for the bad times as well. The risk is high. Also, at the time of our conversation, her neighbour who ran the store beside her was about to get evicted. He just could not bring in enough money to pay the rent. His once thriving business was unable to pay even the basic bills. Her advice to me was not to go into business, but to work for someone. That way, you are assured of a monthly salary, food on your table and year end bonuses when times are food. You don't have to worry about staffing, business debt or other finances in you business (unless you are an accountant) That is great advice for a 'farmer personality'. A farmer personality is one who prefers security. Who is accustomed to following the rules and is risk averse. He or she prefers to cultivate, than to hunt. Hence the term farmer personality.
Advice from a 'Hunter' personalityI spoke to a former entrepreneur. He has since retired, migrated to Australia to enjoy life for a while and has returned to care for his grandchildren.A true hunter, his advice is this. It is better to work for yourself than for some one else. That way, you enjoy the fruit of your labour. You have your freedom. The ideas you have are yours and you profit from them. If you work for someone, that person or organization owns you. Every idea you have on the job would profit them and not yourself. His advice is to think big. Sell your products, services, design, whatever to the biggest brand name globally. Make a name for yourself through them. When negotiating a deal, ask for royalties in addition to the lump sum payment. Do not be afraid to fail. When you act, make sure that your product, design, whatever is the best around. If you can improve it, improve it first before going all out selling it. That is great advice for someone with a hunter personality. A hunter personality is some one who loves freedom. A go getter. Someone who loves the 'hunt'. See Are you a born entrepreneur for details.
