How I built my web siteI built my website www.womanht.com almost 2 years ago. I did it all from scratch, with lots of pain, tears, stress and hair loss. If I had known then what I know now, I would have bought Site Build It from site sell Domain NameThe first thing I did was to get a domain name for my site. I forked out US$35 for that. A domain name should be short and easy to remember. It should reflect the name of your intended business, or the products or services you intend to sell. Since my business name was 'A Woman's Heart', I had it shortened to www.womanht.com A .com name is much better than .net or .anything else. If you just type a word on the browser, it will find the .com by default. For example, if you type flowers, you go to flowers.com. I got mine from this merchant Get it NOW at Register.com--Domains are going fast! Building your siteI was very tight with cash, so I downloaded netscape collaborator from netscape.com I used netscape composer to write each page of my site. Then I went to edit the source, to add in the meta tags in html. For the birdie animations, I used java. I downloaded the free java software from java.sun.com This is not something I would recommend. Java is a difficult programming language to learn on your own. Even for IT professionals. I managed it as I have many years of experience in IT and a flair for picking up new programming languages. Of the languages I have learnt on my own, Java is probably the most difficult. As my site grew, I invested in Microsoft Front Page and other software to make my life much easier. HostingNext thing is to find a place to host your website. I ruled out free hosting services as they would put their own banners on my precious website. For full control, I chose a paid service. That is where the bulk of the cost of my site comes from. I had to transfer my domain to their ip address, and publish to a directory at an ip address that they gave me. Took me a couple of days to get it working right. I had to ftp the pages to the correct folders and sub folders to get the web site working right. Later on, with Microsoft Frontpage, I could publish it in directly. I found my hosting service from the site where I registered my domain. Get it NOW at Register.com--Domains are going fast! Here's what I did: Hosting your site Actually, an easier and in the long run, cheaper way would have been to use Site Build It That way, you don't have to go through so much pain getting the site up. Also, you save on software and books to teach you to use the software.
