Find your niche on the web

If you are a small business, or a one-man or one-woman show, you can't expect to compete with the likes of Amazon.com.

The big players would go for larger demographics. They have the resources. They have the marketing budget and all. How could you ever hope to compete?

Actually, you can compete. You just have to be more focused

Focus

First, don't try selling to everyone. Try selling to everyone, and you will end up selling to no one.

Find your target audience. Who do you think you can relate to? The single mothers? The teenaged boys? The harried executive?

Find their needs. What do they want? What are their needs? What triggers them to buy a product or service?

Plan

Now that you know who you are targeting, what are you selling? How do you plan to make money from your web site?

What image do you want your company (or web site) to portray? What image would appeal to your target audience?

From there, you should be able to decide the name of your company, the website URL and look and feel of your intended site. Pick a name that is catchy and easy to remember. Also, it should appeal to your target customers. Also, a .com domain as best. Type womanht and you go to www.womanht.com and not www.womanht.anything else

Submit

Next, let the world to know that your web site exists.

Start by submitting your web site to the search engines. Read about the  Search engine friendly website

Also submit your web site to the directories. That's where the focus of your website comes in handy. If you are focused, you should have no problem finding the best place in the directories for your web site. If you use a scattergun approach, then good luck! Directories that you should list in are dmoz.org, yahoo.com and looksmart.com

Write press releases and advertise to make your web business known.

Finally

Read your web logs and tweak your web site to increase the number visitors who would buy from your site.

Acknowledgement

I learnt a lot of tips from Make Your Site Sell 2002 and would like to say thanks to the writer, Ken Evoy. With what I learnt, I boosted the traffic to my 2 year old web site from 7,000 visits per week to almost 12,000 visits per week in less than 2 months.
