Are you a born entrepreneur?

According to Wilson Harrel, in his book For Entrepreneurs only, Entrepreneurs are hunters in a world of farmers. Entrepreneurs thrive on freedom.

Terror and elation

All entrepreneurs know about terror. That awful feeling that you may lose a key account that could destroy your fledging business. The churning feeling in your stomach as you put on a brave front and face the uncertainties that come in the territory.

The terror you face as a huge company mounts a devastating campaign that could wipe you out, followed by the elation when you outsmart them and they withdraw.

Terror when the market changes suddenly and catches you unprepared, with all you savings invested in products that are suddenly obsolete. Elation when you find a different use for your products and market it with new booming demand.

Every entrepreneur has faced terror and elation to some extent. It is part of their life.

What makes an entrepreneur tick?

Entrepreneurs are motivated, not so much by money and power (though money sure comes in handy), but by freedom.

While other people say entrepreneurs take risks, to the entrepreneur, there is no risk. They are so sure of success that to them, there is no risk. If there is any doubts of success, the entrepreneur would revise the product, the plans whatever, until in his mind, there is no doubt that they would succeed.

The entrepreneur as compared to the small business owner

While society lumps entrepreneurs with small businesses, the two are worlds apart.

The small business owner think small. Maybe just get the business from this neighborhood. Entrepreneurs think big. First get the business in this state, then the country, then the world.

The small business may volunteer for various organizations, help out in his son's school and have time for activities outside work. The entrepreneur's entire life revolves around his business.

The 2 simply are not the same.

Entrepreneurs and the large businesses

Entrepreneurs may compete with the big businesses, but they are unlike the CEOs of the big businesses. While CEOs focus on profits and what wall street thinks about them, entrepreneurs focus on their product, their customers and their people.

Entrepreneurs regard big businesses as dinosaurs. Huge, slow and heading towards extinction.

Entrepreneurs love to outsmart big businesses. That's how an entrepreneur survives. By moving faster and more effectively than the huge bureaucratic organisations.

Attention Deficit Disorder and Entrepreneurs

An interesting observation was made in the book comparing a person with Attention Deficit Disorder, and the traits that make the entrepreneur a hunter.

A person with attention deficit disorder is distractable. The hunter (read entrepreneur) is constantly monitoring the environment.

The Attention Deficit Disorder 'victim' has a short attention span, but can be intensely focused for long periods of time. The hunter is tireless and capable of sustained drives, but ONLY when hot on the trail.

The Attention Deficit Disorder 'victim' is a poor planner. Disorganized and impulsive and makes snap decisions. The hunter throws himself into the chase at a moment's notice.

The list goes on.

Good news for parents of kids with Attention Deficit Disorder. The kid may grow up to be a great entrepreneur one day. It is up to you to give him or her that chance.
