baby namesAre you looking for baby names?
Imagine naming your son Michael or your daughter Jane. Then when they go to school, there are 3 other Michaels and 2 other Janes in their class. How special would your kid feel?
Nowadays, unique names are in fashion.
No more sticking to the common names like Tom, Dick and Harry. You can come up with creative names for your baby.
You could derive a new name by spelling a name differently from the norm. Katherine can be spelt in a different way, like Kettrin.
You could take names like Keanu which is not a common name. It is a Hawaiian name. A name from a different language would be unique.
You could take the surnames of pop icons, like Beckham or Ronaldo (for football fans) for example. Or even after your favourite movie stars or movie characters. A Star Wars fan could name his daughter Leia.
Some parents name their kids after brands like Chevy or Nike. Some even contact a big name brand and offer to name the child after the brand in exchange for money.
Others combine two favourite names for a unique name to name their kid.
On the other hand, psychologists believe that kids popular names tend to be more successful at life.
Also make sure the name and surname combined do not make your kid a subject of ridicule. For example, if the baby's surname is Tham, and you call him Tom, you'll have a Tom Thumb. He'll have to live with it for the rest of his life.
I know of a girl named Beauty and a guy name Constant. Another girl was named Harmony and another named Rainbow. They have to live with their names for the rest of their lives, or until they are old enough to legally change their names.
A name that is difficult to pronounce may lead to the kid getting frustrated because everyone pronounces his name wrongly. For example, a guy named Ian was called Ion, Yen, Yan and many funny variations by acquaintances who were unfamiliar with such names. That led a funny situation where I called Ian, and was told SHE was in the ladies. I was shocked. Then it turned out that Ian had a female colleague named Yen. Their colleagues would get their names mixed up.
The meaning of the name is important too. The name may sound nice, but the meaning may not be good. For example, we wanted to name our baby Jude, which is a book in the Bible. It means praise. Then we found that some people may associate Jude with Judas, who is known as the ultimate traitor in the Bible. On top of that, the grandparents objected due to the song Hey Jude, which is a sad song. They want the baby to have a happy name.
Choosing good baby names is a responsibility and a privilege you can cherish. Your kid will probably have to live with that name for the rest of his or her life. You can take great satisfaction that the baby has a great name, that you have chosen for baby. Take no chances when you make an important decision like that. Get books on baby names and their meanings and go through them carefully. That way, you'll be able to pick a baby name you wouldn't regret.
