Vitamin CVitamin C or ascorbic acid is essential for our health. Lack of vitamin C can cause scurvy, a deficiency disease, characterized by bleeding gums. In a study performed by Dr Linus Pauling, 1mg of vitamin C in 1 deciliter of growth medium "prevented the growth of bacterium that causes tuberculosis". "At higher concentrations.. vitamin C has been shown to neutralize the toxins associated with diphtheria, tetanus and staphylococcus." Vitamin C increases interferon levels, increases antibody levels and boosts the activity of the thymus gland. In other words, vitamin C boosts a person's immunity. Dr McKenna, in his book Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics recommends a daily intake of 1000mg vitamin C when you are stressed, or 3000 mg of vitamin C daily when you are falling sick. He also recommends that children be given at least 100mg vitamin C the day before, on the day and the day after vaccination, especially with the MMR vaccine. If taking very high doses of vitamin C, Dr McKenna recommends taking magnesium and pyridoxine to minimize the risk of developing kidney stones. For infections, he recommends taking vitamin C and Echinacea to speed recovery. I find this advice very helpful. I took 5000mg daily for 2 days of vitamin C when I had a cold. I continued taking 1000mg to 3000mg for the next 3 days. I also took 2ml of Echinacea 3 times a day for 5 days. That cleared my cold rapidly. Another benefit of vitamin C is that it enhances the production of collagen.
It makes you look younger. The effect can even be seen by applying certain products with
