Monosodium Glutamate or MSG

According to Dr Walsh in his book Food Allergies : The Complete Guide to... Monosodium Glutamate (or MSG) can cause food allergy symptoms.  These symptoms include a huge thirst, puffiness and bloating, headaches, eczema, worsening of asthma, insomnia, irritability, hives and feeling plain lousy over all.

What is Monosodium Glutamate (or MSG)

It is free glutamic acid. It occurs when glutamic acid (an amino acid link) is freed from protein. It occurs naturally (hence it could be included under the heading natural flavouring). Every plant and animal manufactures it. It is often added to food to improve the taste.

Where do you find Monosodium Glutamate

First and foremost, read the labels of the food you buy. Monosodium Glutamate is often listed as
monosodium glutamate
hydrolysed vegetable protein
autolysed yeast extract

It may be found in the following

natural beef flavouring
natural chicken flavouring
natural pork flavouring
natural flavouring.

Monosodium Glutamate is also produced when food is fermented. The longer it is fermented, the more MSG is produced. The following fermented products contain Monosodium Glutamate.

aged cheese
soy sauce
wine

In addition to that, it is found naturally in the following vegetables.

peas
corn
mushroom
tomatoes

These are but some of the foods that contain MSG. If MSG gives you a headache or some other symptoms, watch out for these foods, and read the label.
