Facts about eczemaThe skinThe skin is a living organ. It renews and repairs itself. It regulates heat and protects the body from loss of moisture. The top layer is the epidermis. This is made of dead cells which are shed and replaced daily. The deepest layer of the epidermis is the basal cell layer where melanin is produced. New cells in the epidermis are produced here too. Below the basal cell layer is are the prickle cells. Prickle cells produce keratin. Abnormal growth of the prickle cells results in warts. This happens under the influence of viruses of the human papillomavirus family. Throughout the basal cells and prickle cells are the Langerhans cells. Langerhans cells eat germs and other unwanted things. They are part of the body's defense system. The dermis lies below the epidermis. Below this is the fat where you can find the bulbs of hair follicles and coiled bodies of sweat glands. The nerves in the skin respond to stimuli from outside and from within the skin. Response to stimuli from within the skin gives and itchy sensation which is a feature of eczema. Help for eczemaUse eVent
