The Peppermint Facial

Peppermint dissolves excess oil. It also helps regulate the excess oil production in oily skin. Before attempting this facial, check if you are allergic to peppermint. Make some peppermint tea and apply on your wrist. Leave overnight. If your skin is irritated by it, skip this facial. If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the facial, skip the steps that use these ingredients.

Before you start

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Wash all the bowls, whisk, utensils, spoons, cups and whatever equipment you will be using for this facial with soap and water. Sterilize these with boiling water. (Note: do not boil glass items as these can crack and the splinters can injure you. Certain plastics can melt if boiled so watch out for that). Make sure all surfaces you use for preparing this facial are clean. Remember. For home facials, hygiene and cleanliness is all important.
  3. Make a cup of peppermint tea. Put a peppermint teabag or 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves or 1 tablespoon of fresh peppermint leaves into a cup. Pour 1 cup of boiling distilled water over it. Cover and leave it to cool.
  4. Put 2 ordinary teabags (green tea or black tea but not herbal tea) into another cup. Pour boiling water over it. Discard the water. Pour cool water over it. Discard the water. Set aside.
  5. If you are not allergic to eggs: Crack a fresh egg. Separate the egg white from the egg yolk. Keep in 2 separate bowls. Refrigerate both until ready to use. Use within an hour.
  6. Put 1 tablespoon of oat flour into a bowl.
  7. Put some dried honeysuckle flowers into another bowl.
  8. Fill a kettle with water and set that to boil.
  9. Wear a hair band or shower cap to keep your hair off your face.
  10. Get ready some cotton pads and a clean towel an 1 tablespoon of skim milk.
  11. Now you are ready for your facial.

The facial

  1. Dip a pair of clean cotton pads into the milk. Use these pads to wipe your makeup off your face. Discard leftover milk.
  2. Wash off the milk with lots of water.
  3. Mix 1 tablespoonful of peppermint tea with the oat flour. Use that as a scrub to cleanse your face. Discard leftover scrub.
  4. Wash off the scrub with lots of water.
  5. Dry your face with a clean towel.
  6. Pour boiling water into the bowl of honeysuckle flowers.
  7. With the towel forming a 'tent' over your head and the bowl, keep your face about 20cm above the bowl. (Caution: Skip this step if you are an asthmatic. The steam could trigger an attack. Skip this step if you have thread veins. The heat could worsen your condition )
  8. Relax and let the steam cleanse your face for 10 minutes.
  9. If you are NOT allergic to eggs, you can try the following face pack: Beat the egg white until very frothy. If possible, try to beat until as stiff as possible. Add in 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves, or cut open the peppermint tea bag and pour it in. Continue beating to mix the peppermint leaves well into the egg white. Lie down. Apply the face pack on your face. Discard leftover mixture.
  10. If you ARE allergic to eggs: mix 1 tablespoonful of peppermint tea with 1 tablespoonful of pure kaolin powder. Apply that on your face as a face pack, avoiding your eye area.
  11. Put 1 cool ordinary tea bag over each eye
  12. Relax and wait for the face pack to dry.
  13. Remove the teabags
  14. Wash off the face pack with lots of water.
  15. Dip 2 new cotton pads in the peppermint tea and use it as a toner to clean your face further. Discard leftover peppermint tea.
  16. Apply your favourite moisturizer 

Tip

If you are not allergic to eggs, you can use the egg yolk to make a hair pack. Beat the egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of distilled water and 1 teaspoon cider vinegar. Apply on your hair as a pre-shampoo hair pack. Leave 10 minutes. Rinse off completely with COOL water. (If you use hot water, you could end up with scrambled eggs in your hair which would be very difficult to remove). Shampoo and condition as usual.
