Underworld movie review

Underworld is a horror/love story about the war between vampires and lycan, also known as the werewolves.

This war has raged for centuries and has taken many lives on both sides.

How did this war start? What will the outcome be?

There are to sides in this war. The vampires led by Viktor and the werewolves, led by Lucian.

The story is told from Selene's point of view. A beautiful vampire warrior, played by Kate Beckinsale.

Selene was transformed by Viktor into a vampire, after the death of her family, supposedly killed by the werewolves. From that point onwards, she was dedicated to killing the Lycans, and keeping the underworld free of them.

In some scenes, Selene reminds me of Trinity in the Matrix. Especially when she leaps around in that black outfit, though she lacks that hard edge expected in a vampire warrior.

Viktor is the oldest and the most powerful vampire of all. One of the 3 elders. He is like a father figure to Selene, yet is the most feared and respected vampire of all. While the other vampires like Selene depend on silver bullets to kill the werewolves, Viktor, with his immense strength needs only his sword.

Kraven is the power hungry vampire who is after Selene's affections. While Viktor was asleep, Kraven ruled the Vampires. As the movie goes on, you see more of Kraven's deception.

Lucian, the leader of the Lycans was believed to have been dead for 6 centuries. The most cunning of the werewolves, Lucian is the most feared Lycan amongst the vampires. Yet, there is a side of him that Selene has yet to see. The beginning of the bloody war between the Lycans and Vampires have something to do with Lucian's past.

Michael,played by Scott Speedman, is the human caught in the cross fire between the Lycans and the vampires. The Lycans, Lucian especially, have a special interest in Michael. Selene stumbled on the lycans tracking Michael. That started her investigation into the matter.

Michael saves Selene's life, they fall in love. Michael gets bitten by a Lycan. You have 2 star crossed lovers. A vampire and a Lycan, in the midst of this blood feud.

What's so special about Michael? You'll find out towards the end of the movie.

The vampire lead the lives of aristocrats. They live in total luxury, in a beautiful mansion, with all the trimmings of decadent lifestyle. Instead of red wine though, they drink blood.

The Lycan aren't so well off. In contrast to the wining and dining of the vampires, we see the Lycan cheering 2 of their kind on in a ferocious fighting match.

You see the contrast in the lives of the 2 species, having the same ancestor, yet so different.

Overall, this is an intriguing movie with twists and surprises in its plot. As this is a vampire and werewolf movies, expect to see a lot of blood. Not something you'd bring your kids to watch.
