I agree with you that a baby that is not latched on correctly makes breastfeeding a lot more painful. My second child took in only the nipple when he should have taken in the entire areola into his mouth. As a result, the pain was really bad and he could not get much milk out. When a breastfeeding consultant taught him how to feed properly, breastfeeding was a lot more comfortable. For both my kids, even when they were latched on correctly, my nipples were really sore for the first 2 to 3 weeks. After that, I got used to it and it was painless.
