What happens at a day spa?Day spas. Usually, each session costs anywhere from $100 to $300. So when 1 spa had a 1 time trial at less than $40 a session for new comers, I went for it. The slimming packageThe spa I went to had a 4 step slimming session. According to the consultant, it would take 6 weekly sessions before you see any lasting results. Throughout the program, you have to watch what you eat. Cut down of fat and no snacks between meals. Sounds to me that the weight loss is due to the diet, rather than the treatments. Step 1 Steam BathI was asked to undress, and use a towel to protect my modesty. Then I was led to a steam room for the aromatherapy steam bath. It was really relaxing. The steam was comfortably hot, the fragrance was like a mixture of peppermint and geranium. Can't tell for sure what the exact blend was. I was in there for 15 minutes. The purpose of the steam session was to sweat and relax. (The full package would have been up to 30 minutes for the steam session) Step 2 Hooked to the MachineI don't know what exactly they call this, but basically, sticky pads were placed on my problem areas. Namely my upper arms, stomach and thigh. The machine was switch on and I could feel the electric currents stimulating my muscles. The therapist adjusted the intesity to my comfort. That was when the consultant came in. She explained that this was to break down the fat so it could be excreted by the body through urine? Huh? Then she told me my legs were too muscular, that I had to cut down my heavy exercise as the muscles would turn to fat if I stopped exercising in the future? Double huh? Muscle cells and fat cells are different. Muscles don't turn into fat. When we cut down our exercise, muscles shrink, and we also burn less calories, so if we don't cut down our food intake correspondingly, our bodies would accumulate more fat. At this point of time, she tried to sell me some slimming products which would have cost me more than $100 for just 1 item. I politely but firmly refused. Oh well. I was in it for the experience anyway. Step 3 MassageThe machine was switched off and the pads removed. The therapist gave me a brief tummy massage with a cream that smelt faintly of geranium rose. That was followed by a brief back massage. Relaxing. Step 4 The WrapThen the therapist took a roll of plastic cling wrap. That was wrapped around my abdomen, down to my thighs. Then my upper arms were wrapped tightly too. I felt like a mummy. IT had to be left on for at least 30 minutes, at most 2 hours. Sales timeNow I was done, it was time for the sales pitch. The consultant tried to persuade me to take up the slimming package which cost $3600 for 30 sessions with 10 more thrown in (40 sessions altogether), after a 30% discount. She was very persistent. Finally cutting down to a minimum 6 sessions at $720, I politely turned her down. I'm still not convinced that it would be that effective. I still think it is the diet they put you on that ultimately makes a difference. VerdictPleasant and relaxing experience, but you need to be really stubborn and strong willed not to be co-erced into forking out a couple of thousand dollars on impulse.
