homemade acne treatmentsThrough the years, herbs like mint and lavender, toners made from lemon juice and face masks using kaolin have been used to treat acne. These are not without side effects though. Some people swear by lemon juice as a homemade treatment to prevent acne. I've used it myself to treat me acne. My pharmacist freaked out when I told her I had been using lemon juice to treat my acne. It worked for me. I thought a long time before doing it though. You see, lemon juice is very acidic. It has a ph factor of 2. Sulfuric acid has a ph factor of 1. Now, that is how acidic lemons are. Twice a day for 3 consecutive days, I diluted the lemon juice with twice the amount of water before applying it, and rinsed it off immediately. Some women with thick, oily skin do leave it on as a beauty treatment as it does lighten your skin slightly as well as kill off the bacteria that causes acne. I would not advise that as lemon can cause your skin to have a nasty reaction to sunlight. On top of that, it thins your skin. In some cases, you could get an acid burn. The pharmacist I spoke to told me of a woman who came to her with a very bad acid burn. She got it from rubbing cucumbers on her sun burnt skin. She did it back home whenever she had a sunburn. Unfortunately, this particular cucumber she used was more acidic than the ones back home. She already had a sunburn to start with, end result, the nasty acid burn. The problem with homemade acne treatments is that the acidity of the fruit may vary. You have to be extremely careful with homemade acne treatments. A safer choice would be to use acne treatments that are formulated by doctors, or in labs. These have been tested thoroughly and proven to work. I would recommend you check this out instead. |
