I've tried home made skin care, luxury brands, health shop
brands, and drug store brands. Of all these, I prefer either luxury brands
or the ones I make for myself in my kitchen. Given the budget, I would choose
luxury brands anytime. When I'm broke (that is most of the time) I would prefer
my home made skin care to the more affordable commercial brands.
Luxury brands like Chanel, Estee Lauder and Clarins have huge
research and development budgets. They invest heavily in research and
development. They have the latest technologies and the top brains at their
disposal. Most importantly, they have their reputations to protect.
Every product they sell carries the brand's (and the
company's) reputation. If a product is not up to par, the company's image
suffers. Luxury brands can command premium prices because of their reputation.
As such, every product is tested extensively before it can be made available to
the public. These companies have strict quality control. If an item fails the
quality control tests, the entire batch is discarded.
Skin care by the top of the line cosmetic companies are
definitely more effective than home made products or home facials. Recently,
they are becoming more focused on looking towards nature for their skin care
secret formulae. Now, they employ both the best we know of in nature as well as
in the laboratory in their products.
Finally, the real reason why I prefer luxury brands to home
made products is that I am lazy. It is getting to be a chore, having to thaw my
cleansers and moisturisers from the freezer before use. Home made products spoil
easily due to the lack of preservatives. In contrast, all commercial products
contain preservatives. They therefore have longer shelf lives and can be left in
the bathroom or dressing table without fear of spoilage. This is a 2 edged
sword. On one hand, it is convenient. On the other hand, some preservatives can
irritate sensitive skins. I find my skin quite tolerant of some of the
formulations in some luxury brands, and I love the feel of the products. The
texture is a lot better than home made stuff. ( I know they use fillers and
other things to give that texture but I personally think the end result is worth
it).
Different people have different opinions as which is the best
brand. My friend swears by Chanel. She says nothing comes close. Her skin
is intolerant of anything but Chanel. When she's broke, milk and honey is
the only alternative her skin would tolerate.
My mother's skin can only tolerate Clinique. Everything else
causes her skin to break out. I found it pretty good too.. But I tire of a fixed
skin care routine easily and like trying new things. My current favourite is the
Clarins gentle cleansing foam.
The only catch is the price.
1 way around it is to buy during promotions, when they give
free items with each purchase, and to ask for samples with every purchase. This
helps stretch your dollar.
A better way is to look for stores that sell the skin care
