Adult Acne

Acne is not just a teen problems. Many adults suffer from acne too. While teens get it on their forehead and nose, adults get it around the jaw and chin. I've had mine on my forehead, cheeks, nose and chin as a teen, but they are concentrated more on the lower half of my face as an adult.

Some advice given for care of adult acne I found in a magazine.

  1. Use creamy face products.
  2. Exfoliate. Since your skin's cell turnover rate slows every decade, you should slough off the dead cells that would otherwise plug pores. To do that, use a product that uses salicylic acid.

In some cases, the adult acne can be severe. I know as I'm approaching 40 yet I still suffer these awful acne breakouts. When it gets really bad, my husband calls me Freddy Krugar because I look like him during those periods. It would be funny if it weren't so painful. Those huge zits with multiple white dots showing per bump are very painful. Then they fill up with pus with more bumps appearing everywhere. It gets to the point where I avoid mirrors where possible and feel like bashing anyone who happens to aim a camera at me even for a group photo.

Adult acne is no joke.

There are many treatments for acne. The most promising treatment is Accutane that is often prescribed by doctors. It clears the skin, but not without a price. Side effects reported include joint aches, muscle aches, dry skin, dry cracked lips among other things. It should not be used by a woman who may get pregnant as it can cause the baby to be born deformed.

Think that is bad? Accutane can lead to severe depression an in some cases to suicide. It can damage the liver and kidneys as well. I found this site about accutane and suicide which you might want to read before you decide on going with accutane. Honestly, I keep thinking about trying it out but after reading the side effects, I'd give it a pass, no matter how bad my acne may get.

I went to a doctor who prescribed a topical gel, c-mycin, containing clindamycin phosphate, to apply on my pimples. I was pleased with it at first until I read the possible side effects. 'should severe diarrhoea or bloody diarrhoea occur, stop medication immediately', or 'c-mycin has been associated with severe colitis which can end fatally'. Needless to say, I stopped using it the moment I read about the possible FATAL side effects. I know how depressing acne can get. In my worst moments I actually did entertain suicidal thoughts, but I'm a mom of two and don't want my kids to end up motherless because of my acne. It would be plain stupid and totally irresponsible.

I tried Sulfur lotions in my teens that helped for a while but did not get rid of acne completely. I even did retin A which makes your skin get worse before you see improvement but when my skin finally cleared, it stayed cleared for years. That was with teen acne. Also, retin-A is not to be used for anyone who might get pregnant as it can cause birth defects in the fetus. You have to be vigilant about using sunscreen while on retin-A too as your skin would be more sensitive to the sun.

A doctor I went to had an incredible success rate with skin problems. She managed to clear my acne (I was in my mid twenties by then) and keep it away with monthly facials. She attacked the bacteria that caused the problem by making a cleanser that contained triclosan to be used thrice daily. The only problem was her hefty charges. I stopped seeing her eventually because I couldn't afford the monthly bills.

As an adult, I've tried benzoyl peroxide creams countless times.

Did it work?
Nope! But my skin did dry up and I ended up with dry scaly skin instead. I'm not sure which is worse. Eczema on the skin or acne. I've had the both. At one time, I had eczema all over my face, including my eyelids as well as huge painful pimples all over my face. Treat one problem and you aggravate the other. Now that was misery.

As for skin care? I spent good money on herb based skincare products meant for acne. The lotion alone cost me more than $40 for a tiny bottle yet it did not clear my acne. I think that was the product that caused the eczema though as my skin felt irritated when I used it. Yet the friend who sold it to me raved about it. She tried it and it worked. The other things she sold me were really good but nothing worked for my acne.

For herbs, my cousin's friend's acne cleared with daily washing with organic chamomile tea. Didn't work for me either.

One promising acne product I have yet to try because of the price is philosophy

. I'm too broke right now to splurge anymore on acne cures but if I had the cash, I'd go for that one.

There's a new acne skincare line on the market specially for acne which is more affordable. It is by L'oreal. I was going to try that out but chanced on a store that sold clinique products with some discount. I bought the clinique liquid cleanser, clinique clarifying lotion 2 and clinique moisturizer from them and it worked. My skin is almost clear.

I came across this case where incurable rosacea (a form of adult acne) was actually cured.healing of rosacea. It is the one cure that is free. No products to purchase, no doctors to pay. The details can be found in five miracle steps from http://www.lighthouse.org.sg. Worth a shot if you ask me.

drugstore.com, inc. Get pueraria mirifica, a thai herb rich in phytoestrogens. The estrogenic activity of Miroestrol and Deoxymiroestrol found in this herb is much more potent than that of soy isoflavones. Its high isoflavone contents has high antimutagenic effects and helps kill cancer cells and hence is recommended by the site Phuket Herb for cancer protection. Pueraria mirifica is the herb that Thai women use to increase the size of the breasts, to make their hair silky and to keep their skin wrinkle free. Heard of the chewing gum that increases breast size? Pueraria mirifica is the active ingredient in that chewing gum.
