In the olden days when soap was made of fat and wood ashes, soap was not drying. Back then, it was not so critical to slather body lotions to replenish your moisture after every bath.
That is because glycerin is formed as a by-product in the making of soap the old way. Glycerin is a humectant which attracts moisture from the air. It is an excellent moisturizer. Bathing with those old soap bars would be better for your skin due to the glycerin content in the soap.
The cheap commercial bar soaps are simply detergent bars. The glycerin is stripped away from the soap to be sold separately, for greater profit. Hence the commercial bar soaps you buy would dry your skin.
A better bet would be the moisturizing soap bars that have moisurizers added to them in order to combat the drying effect.
Since the stripping away of glycerine makes soap drying, glycerin soaps would be the opposite. These are better for your skin. More gentle, less drying. Or you could buy handmade soaps at boutiques. These can be very pricey but they are better than detergent bars.
