Information on Singapore

Before you set foot in Singapore, here are some things you should know

Singapore information to help you stay out of trouble.

Selling chewing gum is illegal in Singapore. (But no one is going to arrest you for chewing gum)
Want to eat or drink in the MRT? Fine. (You pay a hefty fine for that.)
Spit in public? Fine. (Yet another fine.)
Litter the streets? Fine. (Yet another fine. Our government could do with the extra cash anyway.)
Absolutely no drugs allowed. (But caffeine is ok.)
In general, behave yourself and everything will be fine.

Information on Singapore culture

Singapore is a multi-racial, multi-religious society. The population consists mainly of Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians. The races are so used to one another that in a conversation, a Chinese may speak Malay, an Indian may speak Chinese and a Malay may speak Tamil. Anyhow, most people in Singapore speak English. Travellers may speak to locals in English to find their way around.

The people from the various religions here all have their own food preferences.

Information on Singapore - The clean green country

Singapore is a clean and green country. (It is illegal to litter anyway.)

The roads are flanked with trees, shrubs, both flowering and non flowering types. All well pruned to prevent a heavy branch from landing on your head during a thunderstorm.

An island

As an island, Singapore is surrounded by water. So much sea water around us, yet we need to import water from our neighbours to have enough to drink. By the way, the water in Singapore is safe to drink directly from the tap. In fact, in restaurants, the iced water is straight from the tap, presented with ice and maybe a slice of lemon, if posh enough.

The clifford pier and the Clark Quay are places travellers might like to visit while in Singapore.

Beach loving travellers might also like to visit East Coast Beach. The stretch from Marine Parade onwards has amneties.

A food centre by a lagoon. Sip on the juice in a coconut as you relax.
Bicycle stations where you can rent a bike
Mac Donalds
Toilets.

Further east, the beach is quieter and cleaner. More peaceful.

It is very relaxing sitting by the sea, listening to the waves as they hit the rocks.

You can also see the sea at Singapore's World Trade Centre.

You can see Sentosa, Singapore's resort island across the sea from there. Kids would love the Underwater world, where the fish swim, around and above you, in Sentosa. Couples would love the romantic Musical Fountain with nightly performances in Sentosa.

Accommodation at Sentosa depends on your taste and budget. There are chalets they with comfortable beds, air con, a kitchen and a broom to clean up after yourselves. There are also 6-star hotels for those who would rather be pampered and who would rather lounge around a pool. Read Sentosa for details.

Kids would love the zoo in Singapore. In some exhibits, you are separated from the animals by a pane of glass. The ethiopian exhibit features a money village. You get to see the monkeys up close, watch mummy monkey breastfeed baby monkey, watch little monkeys play together. Those monkeys designated a stone right in front of the pane as their loo, and poo with their backs facing you.

You sit there watching the monkeys dig for roots, commune together and watch you as if you were the exhibit.

Information on Singaporean past times

Singaporeans' favourite past times are eating and shopping.

Orchard Road in Singapore is one of the favourite weekend shopping haunts.

Shopping centres with sales promotions are all over the island. Movies too, when you are too tired to walk and shop anymore.

As for food, try the Satay club for the sweet, spicy tender pieces of chicken, beef or lamb on a stick, barbequed to perfection and dipped in a spicy sweet peanut sauce. Heavenly. Hawker centers, restaurants abound in Singapore. Just ask your friendly taxi driver to recommend good eating places.
