Peppermint

This oil smells of fresh mint. It is often added to cosmetics and as a flavoring agent for foods, toothpaste and in cough and cold remedies.

It is also used in some skin care products for acne or oily skin.

It is a refreshing and stimulating oil. It is obtained from the steam distillation of leaves of the peppermint herb.

The herb itself is a well known remedy for indigestion. A cup of peppermint tea can ease indigestion. A word of caution though, a strong cup of peppermint tea taken daily can cause heart palpitations (Happened to a someone I know)

Properties

It contains mainly menthol and menthone. It also contains limonene, menthene and phellandrene. Menthone is a ketone that in nontoxic in small doses but should be avoided in children below 6 years old.

Uses

For indigestion, colic and stomach pain, dilute 1 drop of peppermint oil in 2 teaspoons of a carrier oil and massage on the abdomen.

For acne, pour boiling water into a bowl, add 1 drop of peppermint oil over it. Keep your face 20 cm above the bowl, cover your head and the  bowl with a towel and let the steam cleanse and decongest your skin.

For colds, a steam inhalation (same method as for acne) can help clear the stuffy nose.

Caution. Do not try steam inhalations if you have asthma as the steam may trigger an asthma attack.

For headaches, mix 1 drop of peppermint oil and 1 drop of lavender oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil and rub on you forehead and temples.

Peppermint oil also repels insects, mice and rats. Sprinkle a few drops of the oil  in areas where you suspect these creatures are to chase them away.

Caution

Peppermint oil can cause insomnia. It is a stimulating oil. Try not to use it at night or for more than a few days at a time as the effect can be cumulative.

Peppermint oil should not be used on babies or young children.

It can irritate sensitive skin.

Overuse of peppermint tea (the herb) is known to cause heart palpitations.
