Niaouli

Melaleuca viridiflora

Niaouli is from New Caledonia and Australia. It is a spicy but pleasant oil. It is  related to cajeput and tea tree. It smells more pleasant than Tea Tree Oil. It is not a skin irritant if diluted properly before use (unlike Cajeput). It is useful for sore thoats, cough, runny nose, cystitis, general skin problems and hemorrhoids. It is obtained from the leaves and young twigs of the plants.

Properties

According to Kurt Schnaubelt, in his book Advanced Aromatherapy: The Science of..., Niaouli is effective against the following microorganisms: proteus, enterococcus, streptococcus and alcalescens dispar. Niaouli's main components  are terpene hydrocarbons, terpene alcohols, sesquiterpene alcohols and cineole. Niaouli is antiseptic and anti-allergenic.

Uses

It is used against colds and flu. For flu, fill a large bowl with hot water, add 2 drops of niaouli, 1 drop of eucalyptus essential oil and inhale under a towel. Mix 2 teaspoons of a CarrierOil with 5 drops of niaouli and 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil and rub the mixture on your chest. Niaouli might keep you awake, so at night, combine it with lavender oil instead.

For sore throats in adults, a gargle of half cup water with 2 drops of niaouli essential oil can be mixed well to disperse the oil and used immediately as a gargle. Do not swallow. Essential oils do not dissolve in water and must be mixed well immediately before use.

Due to its antiseptic properties, it can be used to clean minor wounds and burns. Mix 5 or 6 drops of Niaouli essential oil with 250 ml boiled and cooled water and use that to wash the wounds. It also helps the tissues to heal.

Caution

It has estrogen-like characteristics and should not be used for children under 10 years old or by pregnant women.
