Geranium

(Pelargonium)

There are many types of Pelargornium from which Geranium essential oil is extracted from. My favourite is Geranium Rose essential oil extracted from Pelargonium Roseum. The fragrance of the oil is sweet, feminine, similar to rose. It smells like bandung, a tropical drink made from rose syrup and milk.

Caution: Do NOT use Geranium essential oil when pregnant

Patricia Davis, writer of Aromatherapy, and A-Z, recommends it for its balancing action on hormones. According to her, it is an adrenal cortex stimulant, stimulating the secretion of hormones that regulate the secretion of other hormones in the body.

A study was done by Paul Belaiche on the effectiveness of essential oils against the spread of various micro organisms. Geranium was found to be rather effective in inhibiting to some extent, the spread of pneumococcus, staphylococcus and neisseria.

According to Kurt Schaubelt in his book Advanced Aromatherapy, geranium oil (Pelargonium odorantissirmum) is a fungicide. It is very effective against Candida albicans. (That is probably why it is often used in treating yeast infections in women.)

Geranium rose is a very good oil to use when you are irritable and depressed, especially before your period. Just 4 drops of the oil in your bath makes a difference. It is a great stress buster.

The reason why I bought some Geranium oil initially was to fend off mosquitoes. It makes a remarkable insect repellent. Mix 2 drops of the oil in 1 teaspoon of any carrier oil. Apply on your body. It does keep the mosquitoes from biting you. Also, you could mix 10 drops of the oil in 1 tablespoon of water and spray it generously in the air to keep insects away. Other ways to use it is to diffuse it in the air.

Caution: Do NOT use Geranium essential oil when pregnant
